The California Academy of Family Physicians is proud to announce Sen. Scott Wiener as the recipient of the 2025 Champion of Family Medicine Award. The prestigious honor is awarded annually to a member of the California Senate or Assembly who has demonstrated exceptional leadership in advancing legislative initiatives that strengthen family medicine and primary care across the state.
Sen. Wiener’s commitment to improving health care access and outcomes has made a lasting impact on California’s health care landscape. His leadership on SB 770, sponsorship of the 2025 Family Physician Week resolution, advocacy for AB 2250 in the Senate, and dedicated support for Song-Brown funding allocations exemplify his dedication to strengthening the primary care workforce and improving health equity.
“The Champion of Family Medicine Award recognizes policymakers who go above and beyond in their legislative efforts to advance primary care and ensure Californians have access to high-quality, patient-centered health care,” said CAFP President Alex McDonald, MD. “Sen. Wiener’s advocacy has been instrumental in shaping policies that support family medicine and improve the well-being of communities across our state.”
CAFP is grateful for Sen. Wiener’s leadership and commitment to the future of family medicine. His tireless efforts to support primary care physicians and the patients they serve reflect the core values of this award.
The Champion of Family Medicine Award highlights the essential role of legislative leaders in driving meaningful health care policy reform. CAFP looks forward to continuing its work with policymakers to advance initiatives that benefit physicians, patients, and the broader health care system.
